WWCC circuit races round 1

An excellent days racing yesterday at Sundorne (Shrewsbury) where the Wolverhampton Wheelers held their 1st of 3 races in the circuit series. After many weeks of sunshine & warmth it was with British resolve that the riders turned up as the skies darkened and the rain started to fall - albeit slowly at first. By the time of Katie's (my daughter) race the weather was still pretty much dry as they group set off from the set start line, but within their 5 laps they must have experienced all of the 4 seasons in one, with an extra heavy bout of rain for good measure. The Wheelers youth did excellent in this race with Dan Morris 2nd, Harry Lewis 4th, Katie Britton 5th/1st girl, nice to see that in crap weather Katie can deliver a good result and still hold her own under pressure from the weather & the boys. It was at approx this point that fellow mamil Rich Smith ensured me that by the time he came to display this talents later on in the day that the sun would be be in our eyes :) The racing ploughed on and spirits were raised as club mates and friends delivered quality racing and top placings. I was very happy to see my son Ashley get 1st under 14 boy in a tough fast u14/16 race, and very happy for fellow director Rich as his son Charlie came 4th in the u16s in his first race - well done Charlie. Results as follows :

Cat E U8 - Christiam Laumidis 3rd (his first ever race - well done!), Ewan McDonald 4th
Cat D U10 - Dan Morris 2nd, Harry Lewis 4th, Katie Britton 5th/1st girl
Cat C U12 - Ben Hardwick 1st, Georgia Hilleard 3rd/1st Girl, Sam Morris 6th, Sam Jones 10th, Seb Bacon 11th, Claire Fielding 12th/3rd Girl
Cat B U14 - Ashley Britton 1st, Ross McDonald 4th, Jess Ansell 5th/1st Girl, Jack Smith 6th
Cat A U16 - Tim Metcalfe 2nd, Charlie Smith 4th, Callum Warrilow 5th
Women - Kate Evans 1st (excellent result)
Cat 3 / Cat 4 - Richard Walkerdine 2nd, Craig Ansell 3rd
Elite / Cat 1 / Cat 2 - John Cooper 5th (now riding for Manchester University, but still a Wheeler at heart!)

NB.

What this report fails to mention is that super hero/comedian/mamil director/nice guy Rich Smith was in a 3 man break with Craig Ansell and an Irish dev squad rider for what seemed the majority of the cat 3/4 race, pity they couldn't hold it to the end, but as always with all good breaks the bunch swallows them up before the finish - tough luck guys, but thanks for the entertaintment all the same :)  Pics of Rich & Craig can be seen in the 'attack of the dads' photo album
