Richard Smith

In 2011 Rich  achieved his ambition to hold all six available transplant cycling titles at the same time by winning the British, European and World Transplant Games events in both road race and time trial disciplines. For his efforts he was awarded the Shropshire Energize Sports Person of the Year award.

After years of eating the corporate sandwich as a Chartered Surveyor for Barclays, HSBC and latterly British Waterways, he took a break to concentrate on the development of Mamil Cycling and to write the book ReCycled– the story of transplant cycling and wry look at the British club cycling scene.  He appears to be continuing to ‘take a break’ and shows no sign of returning to the corporate world anytime soon.

2012 saw him finish off his British Cycling coaching qualifications and he is now a Level 3 Road and Time Trial coach: his principle motivation being to continue coaching the GB Transplant Cycling team as he becomes older and increasingly infirm, but also to help local riders achieve their cycling goals.

Based in Bridgnorth in Shropshire, the spiritual home of Mamil Cycling, he lives with his partner Helen and when not cycling is engaged in that other well-known mamilian pursuit of ferrying his kids, Charlie and Grace, around to sporting and social engagements.
